Make your smile as good as new

Composite bonding is a minimally invasive cosmetic dental treatment that sculpts and rebuilds your teeth to fix imperfections like chips, cracks, and minor misalignments. Composite bonding is also commonly used to reshape and contour teeth, and can be a good solution to cover exposed tooth roots caused by gum recession.

Overall, composite bonding is a popular and effective way to enhance the appearance of a your smile, and can be a less expensive and less invasive alternative to other cosmetic dental procedures such as dental veneers or crowns.

Benefits of composite bonding:

Close small gaps or fix misalignment
Cover exposed or sensitive tooth roots
Improve texture and shape of teeth
Long-lasting, durable, and chip-resistant
Professionally scuplted to fit your teeth

How composite bonding works

Composite bonding, also known as dental bonding, involves a tooth-colored composite resin material being applied to the surface of your tooth by our Purley dentist, and then shaped and hardened with a special light.

The composite resin material is made of a mixture of plastic and glass, and is color-matched to the natural color of your teeth, so no one will even notice the difference.

The procedure is relatively quick and comfortable, and usually only requires a local anaesthetic to numb the area.

The composite bonding process

Overall, the process for composite bonding typically takes one to two hours per tooth and two to three visits to our Purley practice over a period of several weeks, depending on the complexity of your case.

1

Free consultation

The first step is to book in a free consultation with our dentist to discuss your concerns and goals for your smile. Our dentist will examine your teeth and gums, and determine whether composite bonding is a suitable treatment for you.

2

Preparation

If composite bonding is a good solution for you, your dentist will prepare the tooth or teeth by cleaning and roughening the surface, which allows the composite resin material to adhere better to the tooth.

3

Bonding

Your dentist will apply a bonding agent to the tooth and then apply the composite resin material in layers, shaping it as needed to achieve the desired look. The composite resin material is then hardened with a special curing light.

4

Finishing

Once the composite resin material is hardened, your dentist will trim, shape, and polish the material to match the natural shape and shine of your surrounding teeth.

5

Final touch

After completing the bonding, your dentist may ask you to bite down on a special paper to check if the bite is correct. Any excess is then removed, and your tooth will be polished to give a natural-looking appearance.

6

Maintenance

After the bonding is complete, it’s recommended that you avoid eating or drinking for a few hours and to practice good oral hygiene habits over time to make sure the composite material lasts as long as possible.

Composite bonding: your questions answered

  • Is the composite bonding procedure painful?

Typically, no, but we will sometimes use local anaesthesia to numb the area, especially if the tooth being bonded has a cavity or is damaged in any way.

  • How long does composite bonding last?

Composite bonding can last for several years with proper care, but the exact length of time can vary depending on factors like oral hygiene habits, diet, and the extent of the bonding. Your composite bonding may need to be replaced or repaired over time as the material can wear down, chip, or stain. Care and maintenance are key!

  • How do I care for my teeth after composite bonding?

To care for your teeth after composite bonding, you should continue to practice good oral hygiene habits such as brushing twice a day and flossing daily. You should also avoid biting down on hard objects such as ice or hard candy and try to limit eating and drinking staining foods and drinks like coffee, tea, and red wine. Regular dental checkups and hygiene appointments can also help to maintain your cosmetic dental work.
